What does AI think of email marketing campaigns? And what would ChatGPT advise us to do to create an effective newsletter?

We decided to have a conversation on this topic with ChatGPT, the chatbot launched by OpenAI at the end of 2022 that amazed the world with the ability to give answers on any topic, from poetry, to philosophy or technical directions.

ChatGPT AI has a complex algorithm behind it, based on a huge amount of information, but also on continuous learning generated by the interactions. Although the chatbot answers in several languages, it still needs a few Romanian language lessons, so I let it answer the way it feels most comfortable: in English.

First, we wanted to know what ChatGPT AI thinks about email marketing.

effective email marketing campaigns

ChatGPT highlights some of the advantages of email marketing such as cost efficiency compared to other promotion methods, precise targeting and the possibility of customization and automation. Thus, businesses can send relevant messages, at the right time, to well-chosen audience segments, increasing the chances that the interaction will be successful.

The chatbot reminds, however, that the effectiveness of email marketing depends on the type of business and the audience, but also that each campaign must take into account the GDPR regulations in the EU and the CAN-SPAM Act in the USA.

How to create a successful email marketing campaign?

ChatGPT has ten tips for creating a successful newsletter:

  1. Build a targeted email list of engaged subscribers.
  2. Personalize your emails with the recipient’s name.
  3. Use a clear and compelling subject line.
  4. Use a consistent sender name and address.
  5. Test your emails on different platforms and devices.
  6. Use a clear and actionable call to action.
  7. Segment your email list for targeted messaging.
  8. Keep the design simple and easy to read.
  9. Track and analyze your email campaign metrics.
  10. Be mindful of frequency and avoid sending too many emails.

While short and to the point, the AI advice is far from simple. Each item in the list in turn requires other steps and specific knowledge. So we take them one by one to explain in more detail how to apply them.

How to build a targeted email list?

Before you can create an email marketing campaign, you need a list of subscribers interested in your products and services. We asked ChatGPT what would be the best ways to get your target audience to subscribe to your newsletter, and he gave us a lot of good ideas.

targeted email list

First, you need to offer something valuable to get people to subscribe to your list. Whether we’re talking about a discount code or a lead magnet that can be an ebook, a webinar or any other free resource, you need to create something relevant and useful that shows users that you care about their needs.

Second, you need to optimize the subscription process. Include subscription forms on multiple pages, make sure they are visible, functional and easy to use.

It also increases the number of conversions with the help of pops. Below is an example of a wheel of fortune pop-up successfully used by NewsMAN users.

Last but not least, be creative when it comes to attracting subscribers. Organize contests and events, use affiliate marketing and integrate subscription forms on other communication channels as well, such as social media pages.

Now that we have a list of subscribers, we can create the email marketing campaign. And the first thing subscribers see is the subject of the newsletter.

How to write a clear and persuasive email subject?

We asked the ChatGPT chatbot to give us some examples of effective email subject lines. Here is the result:

As you can see, the examples are formulas that can be customized with product name, company/industry name, discount type or campaign/event name. Email subjects are short and to the point and create a sense of urgency.

Although we have to do our best to be convincing, the AI reminds us to try not to trick the user and to avoid words that can be marked as spam, such as “Free” or “Congratulations”.

Here you will find more ideas for newsletter headlines that can have an impact.

Furthermore, we wanted to find out how to proceed in order to have an effective call to action.

What does a conversion-oriented call to action look like?

Did you know that simply including a call to action in your newsletter can increase your clickthrough rate (CTR) by 371%? (Wordstream, 2021) If you want to benefit from an impressive CTR, you need to create clear and specific call to action buttons. Use contrasting colors, position the button in a visible place (so that the user does not have to scroll a lot to see them) and use direct words that encourage action.

ChatGPT also advises you to limit yourself to a single CTA to avoid confusion and clutter of newsletter content.

With a good email subject and a compelling CTA, we can move on to the next step. What should the email design look like?

What a successful newsletter design looks like, according to ChatGPT

When it comes to design best practices, ChatGPT highlights certain elements we’ve seen above: simplicity, consistency, and clarity.

AI advises us to use quality images and videos to make the newsletter more attractive and to include interactive elements such as polls or contests.

Newsletter customization is again on the list, and not by chance. Studies show that 80% of consumers prefer to buy from brands that offer them a personalized experience, 66% expect their needs to be understood, and 42% say they are frustrated by impersonal content (StartupBonsai, 2023).

Choose email marketing services that offer you the most advanced but also accessible email marketing customization functions regardless of experience level.

Also, if you want to send a successful newsletter, NewsMAN provides you with hundreds of professionally designed newsletter templates that you can quickly customize with your own brand and product elements.

How do you segment your subscriber list?

Because ChatGPT has included subscriber list segmentation as one of its best email marketing practices, we asked it to tell us what the best criteria would be for us to do this.

The chatbot reminded us that segmentation is important to be able to send messages as relevant as possible to each individual group, and the suggested criteria are demographic, interest-based, store history, past behavior and stage where the customer is in the sales cycle.

If you don’t have enough data about the people on your list, use polls to get to know them better and be able to send them personalized campaigns. Use tags for the different actions they take on the website or in the newsletter and optimize your future campaigns based on the information gathered.

The ultimate goal, as AI says, is to increase your conversion rate. And, we would add, build strong, long-term relationships with customers who are loyal and buy from your store again and again.

When to send your email marketing campaign?

After so many useful tips, we wanted to know, based on ChatGPT‘svast ‘experience’, when is the best time to send the email marketing campaign.

when send email

Although the right time depends on each business’ audience, ChatGPT says mid-week days are generally the best to send the newsletter. It’s also best to send it in the morning, when people check their email more often.

A good practice is not necessarily to rely on statistics, but to test different days and hours on your own audience to find out when you get the best engagement. NewsMAN does this for you and gives you the possibility, with a simple tick, to send the campaign at the most suitable time for each subscriber.
